Our Story
Ujima Life Services was founded on a simple belief: healing begins with understanding.
Since opening our doors in 2016, our practice has grown from a solo counseling practice into a community-centered mental health organization offering therapy, coaching, clinical training, and community education. Throughout that growth, our commitment has remained the same—to provide compassionate, culturally responsive care that honors the whole person.
The name Ujima comes from one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa and means collective work and responsibility. It reflects our belief that healing is strengthened through supportive relationships, healthy communities, and a shared commitment to one another’s well-being.
Our work is grounded in evidence-based practices while recognizing that every person’s story is shaped by family, culture, physical health, relationships, environment, and lived experiences. We believe effective mental health care takes all of these factors into account.
Today, Ujima Life Services serves individuals, couples, families, clinicians, schools, organizations, and community partners throughout Pennsylvania. Whether we are providing therapy, supervising clinicians, offering workshops, or collaborating with community organizations, our mission remains the same: to support healing with dignity, respect, and compassion.
As we celebrate more than a decade of service, we remain committed to growing alongside the communities we serve while continuing to provide care that is thoughtful, culturally responsive, and rooted in collective healing.
Our Approach
At Ujima Life Services, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing.
Every person brings a unique story shaped by relationships, family, culture, physical health, work, community, spirituality, and life experiences. Effective therapy begins with taking the time to understand those experiences rather than focusing only on symptoms.
Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches while recognizing that healing is deeply personal. We work collaboratively with each client to develop a plan that reflects their strengths, values, goals, and lived experiences.
We also recognize the connection between emotional, physical, and social well-being. Mental health does not exist in isolation. It is influenced by our relationships, our environment, our stress, our bodies, and the communities in which we live.
For some people, therapy focuses on learning practical skills to manage anxiety or depression. For others, it may involve healing from trauma, strengthening relationships, navigating life transitions, or reconnecting with a sense of purpose. Wherever you are in your journey, our goal is to provide care that is compassionate, respectful, culturally responsive, and grounded in clinical excellence.
Above all, we believe healing happens in relationship—with ourselves, with trusted others, and with the communities that support us. That belief guides every service we provide.
